In order to make the best out of something, we must pay attention to details. The same idea goes on how to make the best burger. Aside from identifying the right ingredients and techniques, we must also give importance to our five senses:  sight, smell, touch, taste – of course – and even hearing. Got your attention now? Well then, let’s learn how to make the best burger one step at a time.

The Five Senses

Each of our five senses searches for something in a burger for us to consider it delightful and satisfying as a whole. Find out what our senses are telling us regarding the best burger:

  • Sight

The best burger must look delicious at first sight. Its top bun has sesame seeds to make a plain bun enticing for the eyes. Sesame seeds are already associated with burger buns, so looking at them consciously or unconsciously will trigger your taste buds.

Fluffy buns give the illusion that the burger is bigger than it seems. They should not be too thick though since too much bread can spoil the rest of the components. Ones that are toasted until light brown are even better-looking because the color means warmth.

If there are only a few components, maximize the look by picking the best versions of each ingredient. For example, a burger simply composed of buns, patty, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese should be fluffy, meaty, fresh, creamy and colorful to look at.

  • Smell

What does a burger need to achieve that mouthwatering smell? You need to focus on the sauce, meat, onions, and cheese. Sauce with chili and ketchup give the burger a sweet and spicy smell. Some people cannot handle spicy food, so you can tone down the chili. A burger patty smells wonderful if you add some dry rub all over it before cooking. Even if some people do not like to eat onions, these vegetables can trigger the taste buds through smell. Lastly, the sweet and mild scent of cheese acts as a neutralizer for the strong smell of other ingredients.

  • Touch

The fluffiness and warmth of the burger buns get you excited to take big bites. If you do not like being messy while eating, do not put too much sauce on the burger. If you hate the mess but love sauce flood, there is no shame in eating a burger with utensils.

  • Hearing

This may sound surprising, but your ears can take part in the burger experience. Fresh vegetables and tomatoes give the burger an irresistible crunch. Once you hear the sound, it makes you want to take another bite. It is already a part of human nature.

  • Taste

The best burger must be delicious. However, it is much more complicated than that. A burger is composed of several ingredients. That’s why we have to know the right ingredients and techniques to ensure that each component is flavorful, resulting to a tasty burger.

The Ingredients and Techniques

We compiled a list of our favorite recipes for major burger components as a way to share with you the best ingredients and techniques in making the perfect burger. Check these out:

  • Buns

Burger buns we buy in stores is enough to make a good burger. But, to achieve the perfect burger, most of its main components must come from scratch and have a homemade quality. It may be a hassle for busy people, but we assure you that the end result is worth all the trouble.

This recipe from Allrecipe’s Chef John ensures that the burger buns are going to have the right shape and a more high-quality taste than ready-made ones. Making these buns will take a total of four hours, but manual work such as making the dough will just take 10 minutes.

  • Sauce

There are so many types of delicious burger sauce to choose from. So, we just selected the top three ones we like the most. Each one has a target palate and can be made in just a few minutes.

The first one is the classic burger sauce. It is perfect for all kinds of people. You just need to mix 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons of ketchup, 25 grams of chopped cornichons, and 1 tablespoon of American mustard.

Next, we have the perfect burger sauce for people who love spicy food. To make a jalapeno cheese sauce, pour 125 ml of milk, 1 tablespoon of flour and 10 grams of butter in a pan over medium heat. Whisk the mixture until the butter completely melts. While boiling, whisk for two minutes more until it thickens. Add 25 grams of grated cheese and 25 grams of chopped jalapeno.

The last one will be a hit for men. The first thing you have to do in making the beer cheese sauce is putting 125 ml of beer, 1 tablespoon of flour and 10 grams of butter in a pan over medium heat.  Similar to the jalapeno cheese sauce, whisk it until it thickens. • Meat

There is no need to make a complex burger patty. The simpler, the better. If there are a lot of ingredients, the patty loses its meaty taste and texture. You just have to make sure that the meat is seasoned well and cooked without compromising its juiciness and softness. This burger patty recipe from The Spruce’s Derrick Riches is simple yet perfectly captures the essence of a classic American burger.

  • Veggies

There is a way to make the vegetables, especially lettuce, crunchy for the burger. Prepare at least one tray of ice cubes in a big bowl. Put the lettuce in the bowl. Pour cold water into the bowl until the lettuce is submerged. Wait at least 15 minutes. Remove the lettuce to dry, preferably in a salad spinner.
