How Long Should You Stand at Your Desk

Don’t let severe health conditions get you just because you have a desk job. All you need to do is to stop sitting for hours. But how long should you stand at your desk?

Fifteen minutes is not enough.

Even though many experts have been reminding people to stand at least 15 minutes per hour, Professor Jack Callaghan of the University of Waterloo thinks the duration should be more than that.

Based on Callaghan’s advanced calculations according to health and ergonomic factors, the effective sit-stand ratio can be 1:1, 1:2 or 1:3 depending on the person. That’s why he claimed that the hourly standing duration should be at least 30 minutes.

To explain the 30-minute minimum, the math relies on the fact that one hour has 60 minutes.

The 1:1 ratio shows 30 minutes of sitting and another 30 minutes for standing. Meanwhile, the 1:2 ratio presents 20 minutes of sitting while the standing duration reaches 40 minutes.

Lastly, if you have no problems standing a lot, you may opt for the maximum which is 1:3 – 15 minutes of sitting and 45 minutes of getting up on your feet.

Wait – isn’t 45 minutes per hour a little too much in a workplace environment?

Standing doesn’t have to disturb your work.

There’s no need to worry about standing for 30 minutes. We know offices have a limited number of breaks, so we recommend standing desks. These desks can really help employees have a healthier workplace lifestyle.

The whole point of standing desks is to let you continue your work even if you’ll leave your office chair. Company executives can still expect productivity even if their employees are on their feet.

If your workplace doesn’t have standing desks yet, start encouraging your co-workers! This innovative furniture will only give positive results.

In Conclusion

How long should you stand at your desk?

To really change your life, stand for 30 to 45 minutes every hour. This won’t affect your work at all if you have a standing desk near your actual desk.

For a much healthier office life, consider having indoor plants near your workstation.
