Fifteen minutes is not enough.
Even though many experts have been reminding people to stand at least 15 minutes per hour, Professor Jack Callaghan of the University of Waterloo thinks the duration should be more than that.
Based on Callaghan’s advanced calculations according to health and ergonomic factors, the effective sit-stand ratio can be 1:1, 1:2 or 1:3 depending on the person. That’s why he claimed that the hourly standing duration should be at least 30 minutes.
To explain the 30-minute minimum, the math relies on the fact that one hour has 60 minutes.
The 1:1 ratio shows 30 minutes of sitting and another 30 minutes for standing. Meanwhile, the 1:2 ratio presents 20 minutes of sitting while the standing duration reaches 40 minutes.
Lastly, if you have no problems standing a lot, you may opt for the maximum which is 1:3 – 15 minutes of sitting and 45 minutes of getting up on your feet.
